BULLDOZERS began clearing land on Monday in a Torrevieja urbanization as part of a €4.1 million project to create a park and sports area.

The 44,000 m2 ‘Parque de la Siesta’ will be close to the entrance to the San Luis urbanization, right next to the CV-905 roundabout.

Speaking during a visit to the site, Torrevieja Mayor Eduardo Dolon said: “This is a very important day for Torrevieja as we start working to meet a long-standing demand from residents.”

A park must have been built in the late 1980s as part of the development plan for the development.

The developer did nothing and the Torrevieja City Council at the time ignored the demands for a green area.

Construction almost started in 2015 but was halted due to contract issues.

The park will include a variety of sports facilities such as a skate and BMX track, as well as paddle tennis and petanque courts, as well as skating and hockey rinks.

Some large carob and olive trees will be moved to other places in the park to accommodate the BMX track.

There will be a dog exercise area and a calisthenics zone, along with a picnic area and an amphitheater to host live entertainment.

The contractor Urdecon said that the park will be finished well before the maximum of 20 months specified in its successful tender with the Torrevieja City Council.
