Retirees can do a lot every day: these sports are particularly popular with older people.

Many things change for people as they get older. Hair turns gray, wrinkles appear more and more, and age spots become visible on many of them. Almost nothing can be done about it, except for age-related losses. Training and exercise are needed to feel fit even in old age. There is a lot of information on daily training for seniors: daily exercise is immensely important. Even at a young age, many consumers feel rusty after a long lack of exercise. This increases with age.

As the AOK writes, exercise is not only important for the physical state, but also for the mental state. “Anyone who perceives their body in a positive way also increases their self-confidence,” they say. The sports performed should not only train strength and endurance, balance and coordination also play an important role. Both can prevent serious falls in old age. There are many sports activities recommended to counteract the loss of muscle mass and prevent falls.

Basically, there is no such thing as the perfect sport for old age. Retirees should engage in physical activity that they enjoy and that inspires them regularly and over the long term. The important thing is to do something physical at all. Many gyms now have programs for retirees – there’s more to the gym than lifting heavy weights. Courses with trainers are also usually offered there, which aim to increase mobility and help prevent falls. For such courses, you must talk to your own health insurance company beforehand; they may cover part of the costs.

Water aerobics are popular with older people. In the water, many things feel easier for the earlier semesters. The exercises are performed there with floats, boards or small dumbbells. Adult education centers often offer courses for seniors as well. Another sport that is commonly considered a “retirement sport” is golf. Even if the swings probably don’t look like professional Tiger Woods anymore, many retirees play golf into their old age to stay in shape. If you can’t or don’t want to walk the five-mile distance yourself, you can use a golf cart.
