QUALIFIED road maintenance operators are working around the clock in an effort to open up the blocked Sierra Nevada road this weekend.
At least eight people were injured last Sunday, January 29, in a horrifying moment when a landslide swallowed up an entire section of the A-395 highway in the vicinity of Güejar-Sierra.
Since then, the Junta’s road maintenance workers have been fighting to clear and guarantee safety on the access road to Sierra Nevada, with the incorporation of heavy machinery to help remove stones and guarantee the safety of the area.
In total, about thirty people work at the scene of the accident in 24-hour shifts to try to reopen the road as soon as possible.
Although the goal is to have the road back in operation by the weekend, the board has not offered an exact timetable, saying it is “impossible to say” when the land will be cleared and fully secured to prevent further landslides.
Regarding the causes of the dramatic collapse, which also damaged five cars and caused a major traffic jam, Junta technicians have indicated that the event was ‘due to natural causes’ and not caused by human action.
