
World number one Iga Swiatek missed out on the quarterfinals at the Australian Open in Melbourne.
Melbourne – The Polish tennis player lost her round of 16 duel on Sunday against Wimbledon winner Jelena Rybakina of Kazakhstan 4-6, 4-6. In the previous three rounds, Swiatek (21) had not lost a single set and defeated Dortmund’s Jule Niemeier at the start.
Born in Russia, Rybakina was the first player to reach the quarterfinals of the first Grand Slam tournament of the year. The 23-year-old had never gone this far on the hard court tournament at Melbourne Park. In the top eight round, Rybakina meets Latvian Jelena Ostapenko, who also defeated American young star Coco Gauff 7:5, 6:3 on Sunday. dpa
