PLANS have been reactivated to convert an old toxic wasteland in Malaga into a gigantic urban forest.

The Bosque Urbano Málaga platform has presented a project to convert the old Repsol gasoline storage plant into a 177,000 m2 Hyde Park-style green space, with a natural lake, an amphitheater, and cycling and pedestrian routes.

The 3D recreation carried out by the platform aims to respond to the ‘environmental deficiencies’ of the areas of Cruz de Humilladero and the Carretera de Cádiz.

The idea is that the Malaga City Council commits itself to providing the city with a true urban forest instead of increasing the number of neighborhoods with more homes.

The project would place Malaga on a par with other major European ‘green’ capitals and, if completed, the capital of the Costa del Sol would become home to the largest urban forest in Mediterranean Europe.

This is not the first time that Bosque Urbano Málaga has implemented a green alternatives plan at the former Repsol gasoline storage plant.

The organization also highlights that the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends “a minimum” of between 10 and 15 square meters of green areas per inhabitant, and unfortunately these districts “barely exceed” two square meters.

The platform, which has already planted almost 300 trees and shrubs in this area, insists on promoting this project as soon as possible.
