A PILOT of one of Spain’s traffic helicopters, which are used to detect road violations, has been arrested after crashing his plane on Sunday and later testing positive for cocaine and methamphetamine.
The Pegasus helicopter of the DGT de Tráfico suffered the accident in Robledo de Chavela, in the Community of Madrid, when the pilot was trying to make an emergency landing.
While the pilot was uninjured, the onboard camera operator suffered minor injuries due to the crash.
The 60-year-old suspect, a former firefighter identified as Luis Vidal by the Cadena SER radio station, fled the scene of the accident before the Civil Guard arrived to test him for alcohol and drugs.
He moved to a municipality near the outskirts of Madrid, Villanueva de la Cañada, where he tried to hide in the residence of a relative.
According to El Periódico de España, which published the news, he was later located by a Civil Guard patrol that tested him for alcohol and drugs. They found evidence of cocaine and methamphetamine in his system.
Following his arrest on Monday, he was released on conditional bail today. Vidal will now face possible charges for crimes against air safety, according to the EFE news agency.
