The Spanish Council of Ministers finally approved on Tuesday an agreement between Spain and the United Kingdom that covers the exchange of driving licenses, as well as the exchange of driver information related to traffic offences. The agreement means that the ordeal of more than 10 months that left some UK driving license holders living in Spain unable to hit the roads is finally over.
According to a statement released this Tuesday by the Spanish Ministry of the Interior (follow this link to view the release in Spanish), UK license holders who did not or were unable to redeem their documents for Spanish ones before the December 2020 deadline will now be able to do so from March 16. They will have a period of six months from that date for the exchange, during which time they will be able to legally hit the roads again using their valid UK license.
The agreement finally puts an end to the living nightmare that the driving ban has meant for the victims of the situation, who found themselves unable to drive legally in Spain as of May 1, 2022 as the post-Brexit negotiations between the two countries dragged on. , and the last of the extensions of the situation finally expired.
Since then, the victims of the situation, who are not only from the UK, but also Irish, German and Spanish, to name just a few nationalities, have been left unable to drive legally, with the only option available being to take a driving test. Spanish . This proved to be an obstacle for many due to cost and language difficulties.
The UK Embassy in Spain and Ambassador Hugh Elliott have been providing regular updates to anxious victims of the situation since the ban came into force last year. Statements made since November made it clear that the post-Brexit deal had been agreed by both parties, with the “two outstanding issues” resolved.
Since then, however, there has been an agonizing wait for those affected until the Council of Ministers gives the final go-ahead. The terms of the operation will now be published in the Official State Gazette (BOE).
