The VOLKSWAGEN electric car battery company, PowerCo, has begun construction of its new plant in Sagunto, in the province of Valencia, which will be operational in 2026.

The factory will be located on a 150-hectare site in the Parc Sagunt II industrial estate, which will also house a battery recycling plant.

King Felipe presided over the act of laying the first stone this Friday and said that the factory is a “great commitment to the future” and that it will lead Spain to become a “European hub for electric mobility.”

The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, accompanied the monarch and commented that the project was a good example of how Spain must move towards a ‘new productive model in a commitment to innovation and sustainable mobility’.

He added that it sent a “message of hope” when the creation of wealth and employment is linked to the reduction of dangerous emissions.

The PowerCo plant -the first battery factory for electric cars in Spain- will have the capacity to manufacture 150 million battery cells per year at the service of 500,000 cars.

Around 3,000 million euros will be invested in the next three years to create 3,000 new jobs, 92% of those directly involved in battery production, and up to 12,000 indirect jobs.

“This is a country project to recover industrial weight and create wealth and prosperity,” said SEAT president Wayne Griffiths.

The batteries will be supplied to VW car plants in the Barcelona and Pamplona areas.
