The first two public electric charging points for trucks in SPAIN were opened this Monday at strategic points on the AP-7 motorway in the east of the country.

The Sangonera stations in Murcia and San Isidro in the province of Alicante are based in the logistics bases of the freight transport company Disfrimur.

The charging points set up by Iberdrola can be used by trucks and vans from all companies as well as light private vehicles.

The Murcian Minister of Development and Infrastructure, José Ramón Diez de Revenga, said that the opening of Sangonera is an important step for “green, sustainable and digital logistics”, with more than 6,000 trucks a week covering the routes between Murcia and the rest of Europe to distribute fruit and vegetables.

In the first phase, two 180 kilowatt (kW) chargers have been installed in Sangonera and San Isidro, to which a 1,200 kW MCS (Megawatt Charging System) charger will be added, which will allow very fast charging speeds.

This initiative will accelerate the decarbonisation of a strategic sector for the economy, since 96% of the goods transported in Spain are done by road, generating many greenhouse gas emissions.

Raquel Blanco, global director of Smart Mobility at Iberdrola, highlighted that the cost of electricity in the medium term “is cheaper” than the traditional fuel used in the transport sector, as well as helping to combat climate change.

The two new facilities are added to Iberdrola’s ultra-fast charging station in Elche, which is the most powerful electric car charging point in southern Europe.

The objective is to create a 450-kilometre emission-free highway layout for heavy vehicles between Puerto Lumbreras in Murcia and Vinaroz in the province of Castellón, with plans to extend the project to the rest of the main transport corridors in Spain in the next years.
