THE Sierra Nevada ski resort, one of the main tourist attractions in Granada, has made the wise decision to reopen the main access to the A-395 over the weekend.
A vital section of the A-395 has been closed after a large rockfall on January 29, which has caused long detours through alternative routes that use narrow mountain passes. As these routes support one-way traffic, traffic jams have occurred, adding at least an hour to the journey.
According to a bulletin from the official page of the complexThe A-395 will now be open until 8:00 a.m. on Monday, February 6, avoiding traffic chaos on a busy weekend for winter sports lovers.
The Olive Press previously reported problems with the assigned detour routes, which are inconsistently signed and send motorists through El Purche and Güéjar Sierra. The narrow roads, with sharp curves, are not suitable for large or heavy vehicles. Cars were seen snaking along these back roads, and some motorists were visibly frustrated.

The landslide occurred on Sunday, January 29, at kilometer 16 of the A-395, near the La Higuera restaurant. It injured eight people, including a baby and a two-year-old, and damaged some vehicles.
With the road closed between Los Pinillos and Las Sabinas, traffic to the popular resort is likely to be compromised over the weekend.
Winter sports enthusiasts are drawn to the resort’s 106.8 km of slopes and 21 lifts, on Valletta’s northern flank, in a season that lasts until April. On Tuesday, the Pradollano station was remarkably busy, with motorists having trouble accessing the area and returning to Granada.
To maintain traffic flow, the A-395 will be open at the following times:
- until 8.00
- From 10:00 to 11:00
- From 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
- From 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. the following day.
When the A-395 is closed, uphill access to the ski resort is via the GR3202 Carretera de El Purche (Granada-Monachil-Pradollano). This is a winding mountain pass, with many curves.
During these times, the departure (descent) of the ski resort is made by the Carretera de Hazallanas GR-3200 / GR-4030 (Pradollano-Dornajo-Güéjar Sierra-Granada). This route is arduous, with cars winding in single file. Both roads do not have hard shoulders, and any vehicle traveling in the opposite direction will cause traffic problems due to the lack of passageways.
According to the Monachil Police, the descent in the opposite direction along the GR3202 Carretera del Purche is only allowed to residents of the town, after 4:00 p.m., and they must carry proof of residence.
Motorists are encouraged to use Google Maps for GPS route assistance.
There is no current information on when the A-395 will fully reopen.
