Concern is growing over a former Málaga soccer player who is feared trapped under rubble at the site of a terrible magnitude 7.8 earthquake in Turkey.

Málaga CF issued a statement about its former player, the Ghanaian international Christian Atsu, following the devastating natural disaster that struck southeastern Turkey and northern Syria early Monday morning.

“Turkish media report that Christian Atsu, a former Malaguista player, is trapped under rubble after a 7.8 magnitude earthquake. Our thoughts are with him and his family at this time of terrible distress,” the club said.

The massive tremor was followed by a 7.5 second. Approximately 1,700 people are known to have died in the border region.

The 31-year-old Ghanaian international winger, who now plays for Turkey’s Hatayspor, is reportedly missing along with sporting director Taner Savut after players and club staff were rescued from the rubble.

SPAIN will send troops and drones from its Military Emergency Unit to help in the rescue efforts.

The 7.7 magnitude quake struck at 4:17 a.m. in the southern and southeastern regions of Turkey.

It is the biggest seismic disaster in Turkey since 1939.

The Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, said that the support will be transferred to Malatya airport, which is the center of all international aid.

The Spanish government has expressed its condolences to the victims of the earthquakes in Turkey, Syria, Lebanon and Iraq.
