World number one Iga Swiatek was the first tennis player to reach the third round at this year’s Australian Open in Melbourne.
Melbourne – As expected, the 21-year-old from Poland defeated Colombian Camila Osorio 6-2, 6-3 on Wednesday at Rod Laver Arena. In last Monday’s outing, Swiatek defeated Wimbledon quarterfinalist Jule Niemeier of Dortmund in straight sets and is considered the top seed for the title among women. Last year she had already triumphed at the French Open and the US Open, as well as a Grand Slam triumph in Paris in 2020.
While play was possible at Rod Laver Arena and the other two indoor arenas at Melbourne Park, the outdoor courts did not start play due to rain. Among other things, the first round matches of Wimbledon semifinalist Tatjana Maria against Italian Lucrezia Stefanini and Laura Siegemund against Italian Lucia Bronzetti could not start as planned. Both parties fell victim to rain on Tuesday. dpa
