The Madrid Region was the most popular part of Spain for British investment during the first nine months of 2022 according to figures produced by the British Chamber of Commerce in Spain and international financial analysts, AFI.
Its eighth study on the prospects for British investment in the country showed that the Madrid region as of September 2022 had more than 3.3 billion euros of British foreign direct investment.
Madrid was well ahead of the Basque Country with 692 million euros and Catalonia with 184 million euros.
In the same nine-month period, the Valencian Community recorded 177 million euros and the Balearic Islands 54.1 million euros.
The survey shows that British investment in Spain has risen since the first survey in 2015, despite Brexit, the Covid pandemic and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine last year.
There were regional variations regarding the destination of the money, so in the case of Madrid, the sports sector was strong, while the Valencian Community highlighted the manufacture of non-metallic mineral products as well as creative, artistic and entertainment activities.
Graphic arts dominated in the Basque Country and Catalonia, while tourist investment was higher in the Balearic Islands.
There are seven regions in Spain where British investment accounted for 15% or more of total Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in those areas.
They are the Valencian Community, Murcia, Andalusia, Castilla y León, La Rioja, the Basque Country and the Balearic Islands.
