KNOWN as the capital of the Alpujarra, Órgiva is a cultural melting pot with residents of 65 different nationalities living and working together. Raúl Orellana is the interim mayor of the Popular Party. He urges English-speaking residents to exercise their right to vote and help decide the future of the city.

Says Raúl: “The deadline to register on the electoral roll ended on January 15. There has been a high number of registrations. The elections are held on Sunday, May 28, the date on which we must go to our polling station. If you want to vote by mail, you must visit Correos from Monday, April 3, to pick up an application form.

He adds: “In the four years that we have been in the city council, we have shown that it is possible to govern through dialogue and collaboration. We have managed a very difficult moment. The pandemic was a test for everyone. Now, with your vote, it is time to assess how things are done and who is going to manage your town, day by day”.

Many Neighbors are worried about a wave of robberies in the village. Raúl says: “The crime problem derives from the sale and consumption of drugs. From the town hall we have increased the number of local police and we are asking the government sub-delegation to increase the Civil Guard and act in known points of sale of narcotics. Then, the law, applied by our judges and prosecutors, should help us eradicate this problem.”

And he adds: “I urge people to report the crimes and appear in the trials so that convictions are produced. Social services, for their part, are working on options for drug users.”

Raúl describes several upcoming projects in the town. He says: “Soon the works of the new court will begin, we will build a new Civil Guard barracks, and there is a parking and plaza project in the center of the city. In addition, the hospital center will be a reality. We want it to be drawn up this year, after the allocation of land close to the splice, for construction to begin in 2024.”

“We are also improving mobility on Avenida González Robles (the main street), as well as on two other streets, one of the sports center roads, and creating a new park. Access from Lanjarón is a priority, as is the expansion of our bridges”.

He concludes: “We are at a crucial moment for the future of Órgiva. Imagine the town hall Grenada Provincial Council, Andalusian Board and the Spanish government working together. to revitalize Órgiva and the Alpujarra.”

“We can make our beloved Capital of the Alpujarra a benchmark throughout the province.”
