THE AUTHORITIES in Catalonia have confiscated the passport of a 17-month-old girl to prevent her parents from subjecting her to female genital mutilation (FGM).
The boy’s mother tried to have the procedure done in Spain and also stated that “she would do it herself” during a visit to a care center in the province of Barcelona, police sources reported to Europa Press on Tuesday.
Health personnel activated a prevention protocol that included informing parents that FGM was a crime in Spain. When the family missed medical visits and meetings with social workers, the police were informed.
Subsequently, a court ordered the seizure of the young woman’s passport due to the risk that the family would travel to Sierra Leone, where the mother is from, so that the process could be carried out.
The National Police prevented the family from flying to Morocco over the weekend, from where they were going to try to reach Sierra Leone.
The case is currently in the hands of social services. The minor’s passport will be retained until she turns 18, according to Europa Press.
