A 39-year-old pharmacist has been arrested in the Alicante town of Cocentaina for illegally obtaining prescription drugs and selling them to older customers.
An 87-year-old friend of the pharmacist and five nursing home administrators are also being investigated for the scam that defrauded authorities of at least 39,000 euros.
The investigations began last October when inspectors detected a large jump in drug orders from a pharmacy paid by Spain’s National Health System.
The Civil Guard visited the store and discovered 500 cloned SIP health cards with the names of people in local nursing homes.

A database with confidential nursing home patient information was found, as well as boxes of illegally obtained medication.
3,000 cartons of non-approved medicines were withdrawn by the State that were going to be sold illegally to the elderly.
The officers prevented the 87-year-old acquaintance of the pharmacist from leaving the premises with a box of clone-ready SIP cards, along with a file of patient details.
La Guardia said none of the seven people, including the pharmacist, had criminal records.
