Investigations into wastewater show where the most cocaine is consumed in Europe. Germany’s drug stronghold is in NRW.

Hamm – Even during the high phase of the crown-Pandemic, by examining the wastewater, the researchers were able to get an idea of how the infection process would be assessed in certain places. In fact, wastewater samples also occur in completely different areas. For more than ten years this has also been used in Europe to check which drugs are used in which city and to what extent. New results now show: Germany’s cocaine stronghold may be in NRW Meet.

A study on wastewater shows: In this city in North Rhine-Westphalia, most of the cocaine is consumed in Germany

The dubious price is for Dormund. In no other city in Germany was so much coke detected in wastewater samples in 2021 as in the North Rhine-Westphalian city. According to the study of the European Monitoring Center for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA), there are 477 milligrams of the white powder per 1,000 inhabitants in Dortmund.

But coca is not only consumed in the city in the Ruhr area of Germany. The other “first places” go to the following places:

  • Hamburg (459mg)
  • Frankfurt (428mg)
  • Berlin (343mg)
  • Hanover (303mg)
  • Munich (236mg)
  • Magdeburg (222mg)
  • Stuttgart (217mg)

According to the study, it is clear that cocaine use has increased in recent years. In the years 2011 to 2015, there was a relatively stable panorama of coca consumption in the different cities. The first slight changes were already noticeable in 2016. Then, in 2021, the flagrant result: in 32 cities, more cocaine was detected in wastewater than in the previous year.

Coke consumption in Germany is increasing: wastewater analysis shows a trend

Only in Dortmund, the jump from 2020 to 2021 is more than clear. In fact, the value of 477 milligrams per 1,000 people in the study is the highest ever measured in Dortmund. For comparison: In the previous year there were still around 305 milligrams of the drug per 1,000 people.

If you look beyond the borders of Germany, Dortmund is “only” in 18th place among the coke leaders. Antwerp in Belgium came in first place by a wide margin, with 1,582 milligrams.

The research is the largest European project in the field of wastewater analysis. It is a collaboration between the SCORE group and the EMCDDA. By taking a sample of wastewater, scientists can estimate the amount of drugs being used in a community. To do this, the concentrations of illegal drugs and their metabolites excreted in the urine are measured.

The study showed that the drugs could be detected in almost all of the 75 participating cities by 2021. However, there are some big differences between the different places. Also interesting: Apparently, most people take more cocaine on the weekends than during the week, which means that a connection can be made to the leisure behavior of citizens. In addition, more cocaine was found in the sewage of large cities than in smaller towns.

Wastewater analysis is a reliable tool to record trends in drug use in the population. But the focus must also be on distribution channels, among other things. Because traffickers are always finding new ways to smuggle drugs undetected. At Attendorn he came to one Cocaine delivery in late 2022 accidentally to the wrong recipient. But it doesn’t always have to be the drugs that can hurt you. You should also be careful what vitamins to take in winter. Because some make more sense than others. (Daniel Schinzig)
