National Geographic catalogs a town in Malaga as one of the most ‘curious’ in Spain

THE prestigious travel magazine National Geographic has included a town in Malaga as one of the most ‘curious’ in Spain.

The south of Spain is home to curious and unusual places, full of unusual landscapes that transport visitors to fantasy worlds where hidden villages brim with legends of mystery, art and witchcraft.

‘Curiosities, stories, strange legends and even witches’, is how the prestigious travel magazine National Geographic defines some of the most curious towns in Spain, including the Malaga town of Genalguacil, where art and nature come together.

Genalguacil, perched above the valley of the Genal River on the northern slope of Sierra Bermeja, is a small town, with barely five hundred inhabitants, but full of artistic wealth.

Just enter the village and you will come across a colorful weather vane, an Indian totem pole and a wooden elephant.

In fact, the town, considered an open-air museum, houses dozens of works by contemporary artists from all corners of the planet.

Works that include sculptures erected in stone, wood and ceramics; streets adorned with murals, collages, paintings and photographs, with other singular pieces exhibited in the municipal museum.

The town’s commitment to contemporary art, fused with its Moorish heritage, cobbled streets, solitary squares and colorful balconies adorned with flowers, makes it one of the most beautiful and unique towns in Spain and has been duly highlighted for this uniqueness by National Geographic.
