Mountain hiker rejects reward after finding fanny pack containing €8,000 in the Castellón area of ​​Spain

A MONTAÑA hiker in the province of Castellón refused a €400 reward after finding a fanny pack containing €8,000 in cash on a route.

Marga Marco Fernandez went out on the Pico Pipa hike in Vall d’Uixo this Tuesday and saw the bag she had picked up.

She looked around to see if she could see the owner, but she was alone.

Marga continued her journey to the top of Pico Mountain hoping to see the owner of the bag enjoying the panoramic view.

No one was there and he peeked into the bag and noticed a pair of glasses, a credit card, and what appeared to be €50 in cash.

Marga said: “When I started to go down, I thought how unlucky the person would have been to have lost the package and I yelled and looked around to see if anyone was there, but I didn’t see anyone”.

When he got home, he noticed something stiff at the back of the bag, but he didn’t open it.

Instead, Marga showered and went to the Vall d’Uixo Local Police station to deliver the fanny pack.

“They took my name and phone number, but they didn’t look at what was inside, which was weird because I would have expected them to do a full inventory,” Marga said.

Shortly after returning home, he received a call from the police asking if he knew about the contents of the bag.

“They told me there was €8,000 and that the owner of the bag was at the station,” explains Marga.

It belonged to a German tourist who had his caravan in the parking lot of Paraje de San José.

Apparently, he climbed to the top of the Pipa promenade twice to search for his lost property.

The police assumed that the owner of the bag would have used the parking lot and saw his vehicle with German license plates there and left a note for him to come to the police station.

Marga went back there to meet him and he tried to give her €400 as a reward but she refused saying ‘I did what anyone else would have done’.

His final comment says it all: “I asked myself, who goes up to Pipa with €8,000?”
