Motorists are trading their cars for bikes to save money, especially after the government removed the 20-cent-per-litre fuel discount.
Some 20 million people, or 57.1% of the population, already use the bicycle on a regular basis, according to the Spanish Bicycle Barometer.
But that figure is expected to be higher, as many Spanish cities offer electric bikes and many charging points.
It’s already a great option for the less physically fit, as the built-in battery means riders don’t have to pedal at all.
But it’s also proving a cheaper option, particularly after the Spanish government halted its fuel discount as gasoline and diesel prices began to stabilize since the invasion of Ukraine last year.
According to data from the automotive company Norauto, the annual savings from using an electric bicycle is 2,010 euros compared to cars.
It also contributes to a 99% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions, the data suggested.
In Spain there are 900,000 electric bicycles in circulation, which makes them the most popular means of electric transport in the country.
