The MALLORCA City Council has launched an aid plan to help young people who seek to start an independent life away from the family home.

A budget of 1 million euros has been allocated to the Insular Youth Service aimed at reducing the economic pressure on the youngest, especially when it comes to renting or buying a property.

Residents between the ages of 18 and 34 with a minimum annual income of €24,000 can apply for a grant worth €100 per month for one year.

The Minister of Economic Promotion, Jaume Alzamora, said: “This will alleviate the burden of the younger population that seeks to start a personal life project.”

Alzamora emphasized that the high cost of housing is one of the reasons why so few young people leave home.

“Only 16% of the total youth population of emancipating age has done so and faces continued hardship finding work now exacerbated by inflation and excessive property costs,” he added.

The minister said the aid is aimed at helping with youth exclusion issues that are forcing younger residences to return to family homes.
