A MADRID restaurant famous for its Spanish tortillas has been forced to close temporarily after some 30 customers fell ill with salmonella.

Casa Dani, located in the upscale Salamanca neighborhood of the city, has been open for over 30 years and is said to sell more than 100,000 potato tortillas every year.

But unfortunate customers who sampled the signature dish between Tuesday and Thursday of last week have reported coming down with gastroenteritis and fevers after consuming tortillas that were reportedly unfit for consumption.

“From Casa Dani, and of our own free will and not under the orders of any authority, we have made the decision to close our restaurants as of this weekend,” the owners explain in a statement collected by the online newspaper El Plural.

Casa Dani also has a store in the La Paz market and a terrace located on Calle Lagasca.

Analysis of the food for sale at the restaurant revealed the presence of salmonella. The premises will now be disinfected while the owners will also test their staff to determine how the incident occurred.

At least five clients had to be treated at the hospital; three adults and two children.
