Dog lover Adi Jain needed to stop and help as soon as he heard the desperate howls of a dog trapped in a vandalized metal fence in his small town of Monda.

The resident of the town in Malaga, near Marbella, immediately telephoned his friend and knocked on the doors of his neighbors in the torrential rain of December, until about five people finally responded, trying to save the trapped dog.

In an attempt to sneak into a chicken pen, the dog had become entangled and a “metal spike” had become lodged in the dog’s side.

A metal spike got stuck in the dog while trying to get into a chicken pen.

Jain said she had noticed the dog, owned by a family in the area, had been neglected on the family’s farm, which she said was only visited by people on weekends.

The 38-year-old Indian expat said it had been at least three days with no one on the property to feed the dog.

“I don’t understand how someone could do this to a beautiful dog,” he told the olive press.

“He was so desperate for food that he tried to get one of the chickens next door and look what happened.”

Jain took the dog to the nearest veterinary hospital.

The dog died after two days in the hospital.

He survived through the night and Jain brought him food the next day.

When she spoke to hospital staff, Jain was told the dog was microchipped and she had contacted the owner, who said they “didn’t want to keep the dog anymore and refused to pay the medical bills.”

“I was horrified: if you can’t afford an animal, then you don’t have one,” Jain said.

The father of two paid around 400 euros in medical bills, but the dog died within two days.

“I want to be the voice of this poor dog,” Jain said.

“He deserved so much better than this and I want people to know that they need to stop treating pets like toys.”
