Hero Brit rushes into a burning building to save an elderly man from an apartment fire that killed one person on Spain’s Costa del Sol

A brave expat saved the life of an elderly man from a burning apartment building on the Costa del Sol today.

Briton Thomas Barnes heroically risked his life to enter the burning building in Fuengirola today at noon and remove one of the occupants of the house.

But he was unable to rescue a woman in her seventies who also lived in the apartment, who tragically perished in the fire.

The video shows Thomas inside the first floor of the building talking to people on the street as smoke billows around him.

“Thomas saved the life of an old man who didn’t know what was going on,” Anthony Barnes, who owns a jewelry store down the block, told Olive Press.

Anthony, who is Thomas’ father, was on the scene and said he told MMA fighter Thomas to go into the building and save people.

“The old man was sitting there in the smoke. He must have been in shock,” Anthony continued.

“My son took the old man out and went back to look for the woman in the bedroom, but he couldn’t get through.

“Black smoke was billowing up the hallway, dangerous jet black smoke.

“Twice he went in there to get her out, yelling and calling for her.”

The flames, which broke out on Calle Colón, were quickly extinguished once the emergency services arrived.

Two other men, ages 45 and 52, were taken to hospital in an ambulance.

The Fuengirola City Council announced that tomorrow will be a day of mourning for the tragedy, starting at 2:00 p.m., and would cancel theater and concerts in response.
