PHOTOS of the new Lego-like home for the elderly from modules built in China show the incredible facilities soon to be enjoyed by Gibraltar’s seniors.

The new nursing home is almost ready for people to move in, Gibraltar Government photos show.

A Chinese company shipped the 200 prefab units on the merchant ship ‘Great Faith’ on January 11.

The trucks transported the precast modules at night during that week to avoid as much disruption as possible along Queensway, which is often very busy.

The government apologized for the “great noise generated by the unloading operation at the shipyard” in mid-January.

“It is important to note that the beneficiaries of this project will be many of Gibraltar’s older citizens,” the government said at the time.

Nursing homes at the Rooke site
MAGIC: The expertly designed bathrooms at the Rooke site provide seniors with the easiest living arrangement in their new homes.

“There is expected to be a significant knock-on effect with the launch of rental housing to people on the housing waiting list,” he added.

Once unloaded, workers quickly arranged them in the correct order like a 3D puzzle at the site of the former HMS Rooke military base throughout January.

Now, in February, the rooms in the new nursing homes are seen as a vast improvement over other nursing homes like Mount Alvernia.

Sir Joe Bossano said last year that the new home for the elderly “will eventually replace Mount Alvernia”.

He told The Chronicle that many older residents would want to move to a more central home when given the option.
