dusseldorf The development department is the heart of every car manufacturer. The engineers there are working on the future. They design the models on which a car manufacturer will earn its money a few years later.

To ford play that on Europe apparently no longer relevant. The exact figures are not yet available. But there is no longer much doubt that around two-thirds of development engineers will have to leave this year. The American car company has announced a new austerity plan for its loss-making European department and therefore wants to cut the employment plan at the Cologne development center.

The US headquarters sees the future in a greater concentration of development work in the USA. More and more world cars will be created there. This leaves less room for regional peculiarities like in Europe. European customers should also be more oriented towards American taste in the future.

ford wants to focus on development

Ford has been in for years Germany and not particularly successful in other European countries. How the automobile company then in this country new successes with stronger in the USA wants to celebrate developed models, Ford managers probably don’t know either. But one thing is for sure: America’s second-largest car company is estranged further and further from its European customers.

In the longer term, the planned job cuts at the European development hub will have a dramatic impact. Ford’s German headquarters in Cologne lose the guarantors of a secure automotive future. If all the planned savings plans come true, the number of Ford employees in Cologne will fall below the 10,000 mark for the first time.

The loss of the engineers who would develop the European models for the post-2030 period is particularly painful. Work on it should start very soon. The cars with which Ford hopes to attract new customers by 2030 are more or less ready and no longer require any major development work.

When it comes to new austerity programs, Ford is rarely considered and most of the time sticks firmly to its cost targets. This is demonstrated by the planned closure of the car plant in Saarlouis, which was decided last year.

If the new models needed for the European market are not available in Cologne after 2030, Ford’s US headquarters could offer further saving ideas. Anyone closing the Saarlouis plant would certainly have no qualms about doing the same elsewhere.
