Police from all over Andalusia came to Gibraltar for a friendly visit for the first time last Saturday.
Eight International Police Association (IPA) directors were all smiles at the local IPA headquarters during the visit.
Away from the tense political confrontation between Gibraltar and Spain or the fight against crime, the officers displayed their camaraderie during their short stay.
The directors of IPA came from cities such as Cádiz, Marbella, Huelva, Córdoba and Seville.
They toured Upper Rock, checked out the Great Siege Tunnels, and saw the views from Europa Point.
“They had a fantastic time,” said IPA Gibraltar Section Chairman PC Ben Bentley.
“This is about strengthening ties and friendships between police forces.”
Bentley met with the president of the Andalusian IPA, Pablo Berbecho, to discuss creating new links between the two associations.
They now plan to “strengthen relations and communications”, the Royal Gibraltar Police said in a statement.
The EU treaty that Spain is discussing with the UK could see greater police cooperation between both sides of the border.
The IPA is the world’s largest police association with more than 372,000 members in nearly 100 countries.
It was founded in 1950 by UK police officer Arthur Troop and its officers are based in Nottingham.
“We are a non-governmental organization and our goals are to create and strengthen bonds of friendship between members of the police service,” the IPA says on its website.
It is committed to human rights, world peace and international cooperation.
