THE BBC has acquired Anthony Horowitz’s critically acclaimed mystery series Magpie Murders, the British Broadcasting Corporation has announced.

The critically acclaimed mystery series will now air on the BBC after being acquired from BritBox, where it originally aired in 2022.

The Beeb also noted that it will air its follow-up, the upcoming Moonflower Murders, which will be made by Eleventh Hour Films in association with Salt Films for PBS MASTERPIECE and the BBC.

“Based on their best-selling books of the same name, both series are adapted for television by Anthony Horowitz and executive produced by Jill Green. Magpie Murders is directed by Peter Cattaneo (The Full Monty, The Rocker),” the BBC wrote.

“Magpie Murders is a six-part murder mystery within a murder mystery,” he added.

Academy Award nominee Lesley Manville (The Crown, Phantom Thread) stars as editor-turned-detective Susan Ryeland and is joined by Timothy McMullan (Patrick Melrose, The Serpent) as famed literary detective Atticus Pünd.

The show also stars BAFTA nominee Daniel Mays (1917, Line of Duty), Michael Maloney (Belfast, The Trial Of Christine Keeler), double Olivier Award winner Conleth Hill (Vienna Blood, Game of Thrones), Alexandros Logothetis (The Island, Business in the Balkans), Claire Rushbrook (Sherwood, The Split), Pippa Haywood (Bodyguard, Bridgerton), Matthew Beard (Vienna Blood, Dracula) and Harry Lawtey (Industry, Benediction).

Speaking after the move was confirmed, English novelist and screenwriter Anthony Horowitz, 67, said: “I am very happy that Magpie Murders is going to be shown on the BBC, its natural home. I had a lot of fun writing the scripts and a brilliant director and cast brought them to life.”

Sue Deeks, BBC Director of Program Acquisition, said: “I am delighted that BBC viewers have the opportunity to enjoy the wonderful Magpie Murders and its highly anticipated follow-up, Moonflower Murders. With their stellar cast and clever storylines, they are a truly distinctive and entertaining take on the murder mystery genre.”

As noted, Moonflower Murders will also be broadcast on the BBC and filmed later this year.

Moonflower Murders will see Manville and McMullan reprise the roles they originated from in Magpie Murders.
