MÁLAGA will have a Low Emission Zone (ZBE) at the beginning of next year.
Restricted access to road traffic is a requirement of the Climate Change Law for cities with more than 50,000 inhabitants and should be implemented this year in cities such as Malaga.
Specifically, the Malaga Low Emission Zone will have a surface area of 473 hectares in the Center and its surroundings, as defined in the Climate Plan (ALICIA) and the Sustainable Mobility Plan (PMUS).
To this end, an intelligent license plate recognition system will be implemented to control road traffic access through 97 points in the center of Malaga.
In addition, as indicated by the Councilor for Mobility, José del Río, these 97 control points —connected to the control center through the fiber optic network— will be added to the network of video surveillance cameras installed in the control center. the city.
As explained by the councilor, the sensors that are being installed in the Downtown and Soho areas will serve to analyze the traffic that enters the area, but will not prohibit entry.
“This does not mean that drivers cannot enter the center, but rather that they will not be able to drive creating pollution.” Rio said.
“If car owners have a private parking space or want to access a public car park, they will be able to enter. What we want to avoid are diversions”, added the councillor.
The Malaga City Council has been working on this project for almost a year and a half and ensures that the ZBE in the center of Malaga will be active as of January 1, 2024.
