FOUR Benidorm shopkeepers have been arrested for selling fake brand clothing and accessories.

1,913 items with a retail value of €200,000 were stolen by the Civil Guard in simultaneous searches at premises suspected of breaking the law.

Experts certified the products to be counterfeit despite bearing labels from a variety of well-known sports and luxury brands.

The counterfeit products were of low quality in terms of the material used and in their design.

One of the raided stores even had a false bottom behind the counter where the counterfeit items were stored.

None of the retailers could provide evidence of where they obtained the items and were not authorized to sell the brand name tags that were counterfeited.

Three men and one woman have been charged with violating copyright laws.

The Civil Guard said its actions had implications for the health and safety of customers buying substandard products, as well as affecting legitimate businesses.
