PLANS to implement charging points for electric vehicles in Gibraltar continue after a whole-of-government meeting to push for carbon neutrality.

Deputy Chief Minister Joseph Garcia chaired the Gibraltar Net Zero Delivery Corps (NZDB) for the third time at No.6 Convent Place.

Government experts discussed a wide variety of ideas, including exploring the possibilities of offshore wind and solar power.

Ministers and senior officials discussed how they could move forward with Gibraltar’s Climate Change Strategy.

It reviewed projects aimed at “reducing energy consumption, improving energy efficiency and encouraging the use of alternative transportation options,” the government said in a statement.

The NZDB will seek to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, the main goal of the 2016 Paris Agreement that Gibraltar recently signed.

One of the main moves is to replace the combustion engine with electric vehicles (EVs).

The NZDB studied the creation of the Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure throughout the city of Gibraltar.

He said he wanted to ‘increase and improve public participation in climate change’ as part of ‘the need for greater education and awareness’.

A total of 193 states plus the EU signed the Paris Agreement in 2016.

“Today’s Net Zero Delivery Body meeting confirmed that the task forces have made significant progress towards the implementation of a number of strands of Gibraltar’s Climate Change Strategy,” said Minister for Climate Change John Cortés.

“We are just at the beginning and there is significant work to be done that will amount to real change over several years.”

Garcia added that it was ‘important’ to set deadlines and gather experience as we work holistically to explore all possible avenues for progress.’
