Starting this year, many employees no longer have to submit a certificate of incapacity for work to their employer. This happens electronically.

Everyone knows this: you go to bed with a headache or a fever and prefer to have peace and quiet. However, it is important that you tell your employer that you are sick as soon as possible. Many companies also require one after the fourth day of sickness Certificate of incapacity for work (AU)and some much earlier – the employment contract may say, for example, that a medical certificate is required from the first day or two.

Report disability: This is how the new eAU procedure works

Many employees should now take note of an important innovation regarding AU: starting this year, employees with compulsory insurance no longer have to present a certificate. After reporting sick, employers request disability data electronically from health insurance companies. This is all called the eAU procedure. “e” for “electronic”, “AU” for “inability to work”. The sick note goes digitally from the doctor to the cash register, where the employer retrieves it. Important: the new regulation does not apply to people with private insurance: they must present the health insurance certificate to both the health insurance company and the employer, as usual.

What also remains: continue to be required by law health insuredas always, go to the doctor on time – so that he can prepare the necessary AU. Employees should also be able to receive a paper version of the AU as usual, for their own records if they wish. The German Press Agency (dpa) reported on this in view of the reform, citing the Association of Statutory Health Insurance Funds (GKV). The name of the doctor can also be found on it.

Sick Call: When do you have to call in sick?

Nothing changes when it comes to calling in sick: As always, be sure to check in with your employer in person before you start work, or, as employment lawyers explain, within the first few hours of work. You must also tell him at the same time how long you expect to be away from work.

What else do you have to consider when calling in sick?

Each company also has its own rules that you must follow when calling in sick. For example, the company may have agreed that if you get sick, you will contact a specific person or department in the company by email or phone. And to inform your boss or colleagues that they can take over some tasks during your absence from work, for example, in the form of a transfer email about the current status.
