RESIDENTS IN CENTRAL Madrid have long complained that the town hall fails to clean up rubbish, and images of overflowing bins and recycling points are regular fixtures on social media. But now there is a new problem in the Spanish capital: giant rats.
As can be seen in a video shared by councilor Ramón López, from the left-wing Más Madrid party, three rats of considerable size calmly rummaged through the garbage in a container just 50 meters from the central Puerta del Sol square, which it is currently being renovate.
“They are going to inaugurate the new Puerta del Sol and invite the neighbors who enjoy themselves like no one else in the area: the rats,” denounced the Sol y Barrio de las Letras association in a statement.
These residents have been expressing their dissatisfaction with the city council’s street cleaning for some time, according to the online newspaper The Spanish. They met three weeks ago with the heads of the area in charge of garbage collection to discuss the issue.
For his part, the mayor, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, of the conservative Popular Party, said that there has been no “call or notice” to the City Council about the presence of rats in Puerta del Sol.
‘What we have done is send a team from Madrid Salud [Health] to monitor the situation, get all the information and find out exactly whether or not there are rats in the area.’
The video shared by Ramón López would suggest that there are.
