Anti-bomb squad defuses hand grenade from the Spanish Civil War in the Málaga river

BOMB deactivation experts have detonated a mortar shell from the Spanish Civil War that was found at the mouth of the Guadalmedina river in the city of Malaga.

The artifact was found yesterday afternoon, Tuesday February 28, by a fisherman who was in the area.

Police explosives specialists from the TEDAX brigade were notified and quickly arrived at the location of the discovery to investigate.

Due to the advanced state of deterioration of the grenade, which made it too dangerous to move it to another place, the explosives specialists decided to carry out a controlled detonation on the spot.

Other explosives from the Civil War in Malaga

It is not the first time that explosives from the Civil War have been found in the province of Malaga.

In April of last year, the TEDAX crew was called to intervene with the lifting or detonation on three different occasions; one of them in the capital and another two in the town of Torremolinos.

In the capital of Malaga, a hand grenade known as ‘La impartial’ -so called because its handling was equally unsafe for either side of the conflict- was found in the Puerto de la Torre neighborhood, specifically in Arroyo de Casasola,

The other two artifacts, an M31 pineapple fragmentation hand grenade and a mortar shell used during the Spanish Civil War, were found in Torremolinos during the clearing of a construction site.

More surprising was the discovery of several World War II explosives that were discovered in 2019 among potatoes at a food processing plant in the province of Granada.

The Civil Guard was alerted by the company manager because, after emptying a sack of potatoes in the peeler, the employees found three wick casings and the body of a hand grenade.

Incredibly, the find was the second time in the space of a month that a case fuse had been found in the same factory.

The artifacts are believed to have come from France, from the Somme region.
