A 45-year-old woman has been arrested along with two men after trying to extort money from her Alicante mother by lying about a false kidnapping.

The criminal plot consisted of demanding 3,000 euros for her freedom or they would kill her.

The mother contacted a charity that helps victims of human trafficking saying her daughter was being held against her will in the Bilbao area.

The charity passed the details on to the National Police in Córdoba, who in turn spoke to the mother.

She said she received a phone call from her daughter saying she owed money for drugs and that two men had held her for a fortnight.

Her alleged ordeal included assault and being forced into prostitution.

The frightened mother later spoke to the two kidnappers and told them that if she paid them 3,000 euros, the debt would be settled and her daughter would be released in Bilbao.

The mother convinced the men to reduce their demand to just €800 and insisted that any cash delivery take place in the Alicante area.

The National Police established that she was being deceived and that her daughter was not in danger.

At a meeting point arranged at a service station in the city of Alicante, a trap was set with agents on the lookout for the extortionists.

The two ‘kidnappers’ stopped in their car -along with the daughter- and were detained by policemen who were waiting for their arrival.
