LOCAL artists could take home an impressive £3,000 if they can win the annual Gibraltar Spring Visual Arts Competition which takes place in May this year.

The Ministry of Culture will award the highest absolute award to Gibraltarians over the age of 16 on one of the most anticipated dates on the artistic calendar.

Works from the categories of painting, sculpture, photography and video will be exhibited at the Gustavo Bacarisas Gallery in Plaza Casemates from May 17 to 27.

The Ministry of Culture will also award four prizes of £750 each for these four different categories.

There will also be a prize of £1,000 for ‘Best Gibraltar Theme’ sponsored by the Kishin Alwani Foundation.

Sovereign Gibraltar will award ‘Best Young Artist’ £1,000 for their effort.

Naomi Martinez won last year’s contest with a video piece called ‘El Viento Del Poniente Blows’. She also took the photography award for other work.

Lenka Tryb won the prize for painting, Shane Dalmedo for sculpture and Leo Sanguinetti for ‘Best Gibraltar Subject’.

Julian Louis Osborne won the Sovereign Art Foundation Award for Best Young Artist.

Artists can submit up to five works, but no more than two per category, organizers said.

Another rule is that the works must be original and not be submitted to other contests. Only young artists can be exempt from this rule.

Entry forms and rules are available from the Gibraltar Galleries and the Ministry of Culture at John Mackintosh Hall.

Artists can present their works in the gallery from May 3 to 5. But video entries must be submitted via email from April 12-14.
