A brutal gang is still on the run after torturing a well-known Valencian businessman and threatening to cut off his young son’s ear.
The assault occurred in Bétera last month, but the details have only recently been made public and so far there have been no arrests by the Civil Guard.
Four hooded assailants said they were Guard officers and were wearing identifying vests during the December 8 home invasion.
They entered the villa in the Torre en Conill urbanization belonging to a hospitality businessman and demanded money.
The 53-year-old resident told them there was no cash at the property.
He was then assaulted and tortured before being thrown down the stairs leading to the basement.
His pregnant wife came home an hour later and after covering her head, the thugs threatened her and their 20-month-old son.
Again the demands for money continued and the thieves threatened to cut off one of the baby’s ears.
Then one of the gang was heard saying: “Man, there is no money here. Go. We’ve screwed up.”
They left with some watches and the baby’s christening medallion, also speaking on the phone with a fifth gang member who may have been waiting outside.
They also took all the car keys from the villa so they could not be pursued.
The owner of the house and his wife were tied up but managed to free themselves with the help of their maid.
The businessman suffered numerous rib fractures and facial bruises and was transferred to the Arnau de Vilanova Hospital.
